Safety Classes Offered:

Course Title:  CPR/First Aid

Course length: 1 Day (8 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

This course teaches individuals to recognize and respond to sudden illnesses, injuries, and breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults and children. Course will familiarize students with use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for victims of cardiac arrest. Attendees will practice adult and child CPR skills. Certification upon completion for First Aid/CPR and AED.

Maximum number of students: 20 in Anchorage/Palmer; 10 in Fairbanks, Kodiak, Juneau and Soldotna

Course Title:  CESCL (Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead

Course length: 1 Day (8 Hours)

Course Title:  8 Hour Hazmat Refresher (Annual)

Course length: 1 Day (8 Hours)

Pre-requisite: Must have completed 40 Hour Hazmat Training and be current on annual refreshers if applicable.

 

Basic course description:

Annual update that addresses the required elements within the HAZWOPER standards, new equipment, technologies, and methodologies that have evolved over the past year that are essential for HAZWOPER site workers.

Course Title:  40 Hour Hazmat Training

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Geared toward workers whose responsibilities may require dress out. Includes an introduction to Government regulations, Hazcom, MSDS, Emergency Response Guidebook, toxicology, bloodborn pathogens, health and safety plans, medical surveillance, emergency response (HAZWOPPER), job hazard analysis, hazard control measures, basic electricity, lockout/tagout, monitoring and instrumentation, heat and cold stress, respiratory protection, permit required confined spaces, radiation, drum handling, new technologies and Decon. The student will also be required to suit up in CPC with supplied air respirators and APR. He will also be required to demonstrate proper decontamination procedures and proper donning and doffing of PPE. Before entering the class the student will be required to fill out a medical evaluation to meet the requirements of OSHA’s respiratory protection program.

Course Title:  MSHA Part 48B New Miner Combo Training

Course length: 2 Days (16 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Covers statutory rights of miners, responsibility of supervisors, care and maintenance of respiratory devices, transportation controls, communication systems, emergency plans, ground control, noise and dust hazards, job hazard analysis, electrical hazards, first aid, explosives, health and safety topics of tasks assigned as well as other applicable safety regulations.  This 16 hour course will cover the requirements of Part 46 & Part 48.

Course Title:  MSHA Part 48B Annual Refresher

Course length: 1 Day (8 Hours)

Pre-requisite: Must have completed initial 16 Hour MSHA training and be current on annual refreshers if applicable.

Basic course description:

Annual refresher that addresses health and safety subjects that are relevant to mining operations. Subjects include statutory rights, respiratory devices, transportation controls, hazard recognition, explosives and job task hazard training.

Items students will be required to bring to class: If previous training was provided by someone other than the Alaska Operating Engineers/Employers Training you must bring proof of prior training.

 

Course Title:  NSTC

Course length: 1 Day (8 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

The North Slope Training Co-operative (NSTC) is a joint effort between the North Slope unit owners and their contractors to ensure all employees have basic safety, health and environmental policy classes before going to work on the North Slope. The Unescorted program consists of the following six courses: Camps & Safety Orientation, Alaska Safety Handbook, Hazard Communication, HAZWOPER Awareness, Personal Protective Equipment, and Environmental Excellence. The requirement for an annual refresher for the Unescorted Program has ended. Current holders of an NSTC card who are current with the 2006 ASH Update (refresher or 8 hour course attended after February 2006) do not need to have an additional NSTC refresher. In the future, updates are required whenever there is a new/revised edition of the ASH and/or the EFG. All NSTC cardholders will have 6-months to get the updated materials. (Please reference the Alaska Safety Handbook Update Policy.)

Course Title:  OSHA 10 with Forklift Certification

Course length: 1 Day (8 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Trains workers in the construction field on 29CFR Subpart K – Electric (29CFR 1926.400-.449), Subpart M – Fall Protection (29CFR 1926.500 - .503), Subpart P – Excavations (29CFR 1926.650-.652), Subpart H – Materials Handling, storage, use and disposal (29CFR 1926.602), Subpart O – Motor Vehicles (29CFR 1926.600/.601), and proper PPE use. Also includes Forklift certification to comply with OSHA 1910.178 Forklift Safety Training.

Course Title:  Operator Qualification (OQ)

Course length: 1 Day (8 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Address federal pipeline regulations in Alaska. The training provides the necessary skills to qualify personnel working on pipelines.

Operator Classes Offered:

 

Course Title:  Crane Operator Level I

Course length: 3 Weeks (120 Hours)

Pre-requisite: Must have sufficient strength, endurance, agility, coordination, and speed of reaction to meet physical demands, able to read, write, comprehend, and use arithmetic.

 

Basic course description:

Designed to introduce members with little or no crane experience the hoisting field. Course will cover maintenance, inspection and repair as well as information on load charts, crane principles, and theories. Various other aspects including principles of rigging, standards that apply to cranes and crane operators will be covered.

**This course does not make attendees crane operators. Upon completion of class members will have a better familiarization of crane operations and safety.

Course Title:  Crane Operator Level II – (NCCCO Prep)

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite:

  Previous NCCCO Certification or

  1,000 hours Crane Related Experience (must be verified) and attendance in Crane   

    Operator Level I or

  1,500 hours Crane Related Experience (must be verified)

Basic course description:

This one week course is designed for members that are currently NCCCO Certified or have a vast amount of crane experience. Course will cover general items that may be covered on the NCCCO Written exam. Recommended for anyone re-certifying for the NCCCO certification as well as anyone deeming they have enough experience to take the NCCCO Written exam.

Maximum number of students:  40

Course Title:  Crane Operator Level III (NCCCO Written Test) 

Course length: 1 Day (8 Hours)

Pre-requisite:

  Previous NCCCO Certification or

  1,000 hours Crane Related Experience (must be verified) and attendance in Crane

    Operator Level I or

  1,500 hours Crane Related Experience (must be verified)

*** Must complete the applicable NCCCO Written Test application a minimum of 5 weeks prior to test date. In addition, members are responsible for applicable fees and documentation.

Basic course description:

Administration of the NCCCO Written examination by third party. The Training Trust does not have access to the actual test and/or answers nor are they responsible for the grading of said exams. Upon completion of examination the results will be sent to you by the International Assessment Institute within 6 to 8 weeks.

Items students will be required to bring to class: Acceptance letter from NCCCO (Members can expect to receive this after application has been finalized by NCCCO).

 

Course Title:  Crane Operator Level III NCCCO Practical Examinations

Course length: Varies

Pre-requisite:

  Previous NCCCO Certification or

  1,000 hours Crane Related Experience (must be verified) and attendance in Crane  

    Operator Level I or

  1,500 hours Crane Related Experience (must be verified)

**Must complete the applicable NCCCO application prior to testing. In addition, members are responsible for applicable fees and documentation to include passport photo.  

Basic course description:

Administration of the NCCCO Practical examination. The Practical Examiners on staff administer the NCCCO Practical examination however they are not responsible for the scoring of the tests. Upon completion of examination they are forwarded to the International Assessment Institute and your results will be sent to you by the International Assessment Institute within 6 to 8 weeks.

Course Title:  Dozer Level I

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

 

Basic course description:

This course covers the pre-operational checks and inspections. Helps develop familiarity with control functions, basic dozer and scraper techniques including slot dozing, v-ditches, push cat applications, safety, proper traveling, cuts and fills and efficient work patterns.

Course Title:  Dozer Level II

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: Dozer Level I with 1000 Hours Dozer Experience (must be verified)

OR 2000 Hours Dozer Experience (must be verified)

Basic course description:

This course will familiarize students on how to fill and backfill using a dozer around pipe, wall and foundations. Will also cover compaction requirements when using a dozer to fill or backfill, demonstrate the positioning of a dozer for efficient pushing/loading of scrapers, perform dozer ripping operations, and include an introduction to GPS.

Course Title:  Excavator/TLB Level I

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

This course will cover the pre-operational checks and inspections of operation. Will develop familiarity with control functions, ditching, benching, and loading techniques. Machine care and safety will also be covered.

Course Title:  Excavator/TLB Level II

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: Excavator/TLB Level I and 1,000 Hours Excavator/TLB Experience (must be verified) OR2,000 Hours Excavator/TLB Experience (must be verified)

Basic course description:

Introduction to laser advanced ditching, utilities, trench box techniques, loading techniques, machine placement, safety and maintenance.

Course Title:  Grade Checking Level I

Course length: 2 Week (80 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

This course will cover grade checking terminology, conversion of inches to decimal feet to metric, project stationing, slope staking positions, basic plan reading, jump stakes, material management, blasting volumes and percent slopes and grades as they relate to road profiles and culvert layouts.

Maximum number of students: 10

Course Title:  Grade Checking Level II

Course length: 2 Weeks (80 Hours)

Pre-requisite: 80% passing grade in Grade Checking Level I or 80% passing grade on entrance exam.

 

Basic course description:

This course will cover a short review of grade checking fundamentals as well as stakes, coordinate systems, local grids, methods of construction layout, and introduction to GPS.

Course Title:  Grade Checking Level III

Course length: 2 Weeks (80 Hours)

Pre-requisite: 80% passing grade in Grade Checking Level II or 80% passing grade on entrance exam.

Basic course description:

This course will review coordinate systems, GPS fundamentals, project planning from a GPS perspective, GPS set up, configuration and operations. Students will also perform topographic data collection and roadway staking.

Course Title:  Wheel Loader Level I (Basic)

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Teaches pre-operational checks and inspections, nomenclature, develops familiarity with control functions, basic loader techniques, backfilling, feeding plant, stockpiling, pit operations and loader and truck safety.

Maximum number of students:  7

Course Title:  Wheel Loader Level II (Production)

Course length: 1 Weeks (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: Wheel Loader Level I and 1,000 Loader Experience

OR 2,000 hours Loader Experience

Basic course description:

Students will learn equipment care, safety, machine placement, truck loading, trenching, crusher/hot plant applications, multi-tasking, stockpiling and floor maintenance.

Course Title:  Motor Grader Level I

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Introduction to motor grader applications and skills. Emphasis on soils, compaction and motor grader earthmoving operations. Will include segments on road maintenance, sloping, ditching, ripping, scarifying, mixing and finishing.

Course Title:  Motor Grader Level II

Course length: 2 Weeks (80 Hours)

Pre-requisite: Motor Grader Level I and 1,000 hours Motor Grader Experience

Basic course description:

This course elevates experienced operators to use lasers, sonic trackers and GPS.

Maximum number of students: 3 per Blade

Course Title:  Paving Level I

Course length:  1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

 

Basic course description:

This course will cover basic asphalt paving techniques and mat troubleshooting procedures. In addition items to consider before paving, how the paver works and how to prevent/correct mat defects will be reviewed.

Mechanic Classes Offered:

 

Course Title:  AC Electrical Level I  

Course length: 3 Weeks (120 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Includes instruction on motor controls, Ohm’s Law, basic line and ladder logic, logic function, induction, Atomic Theory, and also several hours of hands on laboratory work. Students should expect 2 – 3 hours of homework per night and will be held accountable for completion of homework as well as class participation review of homework. wire strippers, standard and Phillips screwdrivers, colored pencils, calculator and safety glasses.

Course Title:  AC Electrical Level II

Course length: 3 Weeks (120 Hours)

Pre-requisite: 80% passing grade in AC Electrical Level I or 80% passing grade on entrance exam

Basic course description:

Instruction of this class to include solid state devices, timers and counters, proximity switches, and automobile sensing devices. Acceleration and deceleration of AC/DC motors, troubleshooting techniques. Lab work includes control wiring circuit for an actual 400 HP impactor and also an actual burner control circuit simulation an asphalt plant operation. Students should expect 2 – 3 hours of homework per night and will be held accountable for completion of homework as well as class participation review of homework.

Course Title:  DC Electrical Mobile Computers 

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite:  DC Electrical or 80% passing grade on entrance exam

Basic course description:

Applied DC Electrical troubleshooting and repairing, DC circuits, and on board mobile computers.

Course Title:  Hydraulics

Basic course description:

80 hour course covering principals of pumps, motor valves, cylinders, heat exchangers, accumulators, reservoirs, lines, and conductors.

Course Title:  Power Generation 

Course length: 1 Week (40 hours)

Pre-requisite:  80% passing grade in Electrical Level I and Level II or 80% passing grade on entrance exam

Basic course description:

Continuation of AC Electrical Program supporting onsite electrical power production.

Course covers theory and principals of operation, torque converters, hydraulic controls, and power shift transmissions.

Course Title:  Welding Level I  

Course length: 3 Weeks (120 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

An introduction to the safe process of oxy-acetylene cutting and arc welding. Designed for those with little or no experience this class covers the techniques used in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment.

Course Title:  Welding Level II 

Course length: 3 Weeks (120 Hours)

Pre-requisite:  Must have 80% passing grade in Welding Level I and a minimum of 1 year between Welding Level I and Welding Level II

Basic course description:

Offers advanced techniques in welding applications, fabricating, hard surfacing, and line boring.

Course Title:  MIG Welding 

Course length: 2 Weeks (80 Hours)

Pre-requisite:  Must have 80% passing grade in Welding Level I

Basic course description:

Course is designed to teach welders about arc welding safety and the gas metal arc welding process (GMAW-MIG). Includes classroom lectures and hands on instruction.

Course Title:  TIG Welding 

Course length: 2 Weeks (80 Hours)

Pre-requisite:  Must have 80% passing grade in Welding Level I

Basic course description:

Course is designed to teach welders about arc welding safety and the gas tungsten arc welding process (GTAW-TIG). Students will learn fundamentals of GTAW (TIG) welding and upon completion of the course each student should have an understanding of how the GTAW process works.

Pipeline Classes Offered:

 

Course Title:  Drill Helper

Course length: Two Weeks (80 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

This class will give you the very basic knowledge of what to expect when working with and around a drill. (This is a beginner’s class and does not qualify you to be Drill Hand.) Class will cover the various parts and pieces of a drill and the set up. In addition safety, technique, maintenance, and record keeping will be reviewed.

Course Title:  Pipeline Mechanic

Course length: 2 Weeks (80 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Mechanics will be working with a journeyperson mechanic to keep all equipment up and running during all the sideboom classes and pipeline training.

Course Title:  Pipeline Operator

Course length: 2 Weeks (80 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Class held in conjunction with other trades to cover the basics of pipeline training. Areas covered in training are:

Side Boom – Operation of machines and field exercises.

Ditching – Excavator skills for burying pipe.

Crane – Loading and off-loading pipe.

Dozer – Backfilling of ditches, construction of pads and roads for equipment support.

Forklift – Loading and off-loading pipe as well as providing support to other trades in conjunction with pipeline work.

Mechanic – Maintenance and repair of various types of equipment to support a successful project.

Course Title:  Rolligon Mechanics Course

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Overview of tasks performed by mechanics on Rolligons. Includes the hands on assembly or disassembly of Rolligons and the change out of the most common problem parts.

Course Title:  Rolligon Operator Course

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Introduction to operating and maintaining Rolligons to include navigation, tundra and ice travel. Class is intended for those who have not operated Rolligons previously and is designed to include an overall orientation on conditions associated with the North Slope work environment.

Course Title:  Sideboom

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: None

Basic course description:

Familiarizes students with the operation and mechanics of sidebooms. Attendees can expect to learn the controls of the equipment as well as the procedures of operating equipment with a load. Scenarios covered in class will include setting pipe for gang pipe, loading and unloading pipe on trailers, setting pipe on VSM’s and working with other trades simulating pipeline construction.

Course Title:  Sideboom Refresher

Course length: 1 Week (40 Hours)

Pre-requisite: 500 Hours Sideboom Related Experience (must be verified)

Basic course description:

Geared for Operators that have taken the Sideboom class or have operated sidebooms previously and are in need of review on the controls and operations of sidebooms.
